SUSTAINABILTY

A Sustainable Estate

Spread over 300 hectares in the Alentejo region, the estate is a haven of biodiversity, with thriving cork forests, olive groves and orchards of oranges, lemons, pomegranates and figs. This rich ecosystem reflects the harmony between nature and cultivation.

Our commitment to sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Through regenerative farming practices, we nurture the land, ensuring its health and preservation for future generations. Grazing sheep naturally maintain the balance of the fields, while black Iberian pigs thrive in their environment, contributing to a self-sustaining agricultural cycle that respects the land and its resources.

A FAMILY’S PASSION

A Family's shared Passion for Authenticity, Nature, and Enriching experiences.

The Van Beuningen and Ramos families, united by friendship and family ties, share a deep love for the Alentejo region. Together they have poured their hearts into creating a home that feels warm, welcoming and timeless.

Their passion is the preservation of the beauty of historic buildings, the care of the land through sustainable farming and the celebration of the culture of the countryside. Every detail reflects their shared dream of providing guests with a truly special experience.

Annabelle and Vicky bring the interiors to life with their thoughtful designs, while Tomas ensures the estate's architecture retains its authentic character. Harry keeps the finances in check and Hein oversees the bigger picture - managing everything from cork harvesting to wildlife conservation and partnerships with local farmers. Together they are dedicated to preserving this unique place for future generations.

A Commitment to Extensive Farming

At Castelo Ventoso, we are committed to farming practices that honour the history and natural rhythms of the land, much as the Jesuits once did. Guided by their wisdom and deep connection to nature, we have developed a holistic and sustainable approach to managing the estate.

Our efforts include the management of our cork forests, one of the Alentejo's most precious resources. These forests play a crucial role in the region's ecosystem and are managed with great respect for their long-term health. In addition, our olive groves produce high quality olives which we press into our own exceptional olive oil, renowned for its rich flavour and superior quality.

Every step we take reflects our commitment to preserving the heritage of this land with a long-term vision for future generations.

One of the unique aspects of our farming practices is the integration of black Iberian pigs and grazing sheep. These animals play an essential role in maintaining the balance of the 'montado' ecosystem by controlling the growth of shrubs around the trees, improving soil health and acting as a natural fire barrier. We also make efficient use of resources by using meat and wool from both herds, minimising waste.

This holistic approach to farming, known as 'o montado', is both sustainable and regenerative. It reflects our deep commitment to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Alentejo region.
